Buying A Used Car The Smart Way

By Mike Reitz

What to look for when buying a used car can be an overwhelming process because of all the variables that come with used vehicles. Most times when someone is in the market to buy a used car, the fear of buying a lemon is one of his or her major concerns.

The fact of the matter is…

When you purchase a used vehicle you are basically buying a car in the “as is” condition. This could get to be expensive if the car breaks down and needs repairs from the very start.

Here’s a guide that can help ensure you get a good car.

To begin with, you can save yourself a lot of heartache and time by finding a local dealership that can help you find a quality used vehicle. Ask friends and relatives if they know a reputable dealer. If you cannot find anyone that can recommend a dealer, check each dealership with the Better Business Bureau to discover a trustworthy dealership.

Once you find a used car dealership that you feel comfortable with, you can save time by not having to go from place to place looking for the perfect car for you. The dealership most likely will have several used cars to choose from.

You will want to know the history of the vehicle you are about to purchase.

Most dealerships will do a history report to assure the vehicle has not had any prior serious damage from accidents or weather conditions such as flooding. Purchasing from a private seller most often means that you will have to run one of these reports yourself and this will cost you extra money.

You may want to consider getting an extended warranty.

Another benefit for using a dealer is the opportunity to purchase a used car warranty. This warranty will cover major repair situations that may turn up in the future. This could be a lifesaver should you discover some serious issues with the vehicle down the road.

Before signing on the dotted line, be sure that you thoroughly understand the warranty the dealership is offering. You will want to know what is covered and what the warranty doesn’t cover. Also check out if there is a deductible that you have to pay.

Now the test-drive…

Here is what you will want to watch for as you take the car for a spin:

*Be sure you do not hear any unusual clanking and banging noises when you test-drive the vehicle. This could be a sign of a needed repair.

*Watch in the rear view mirror to discover blue smoke trailing from the tail-pipe, this could mean there is an issue with the engine.

*Be sure the car feels comfortable and check out the condition of the interior as well as the carpets on the floor.

*Test such things as the radio, air conditioning, automatic windows and locks.

Ask the salesman if you can see the prior maintenance records and ask if they made any repairs to the vehicle before they put it up for sale. Proof of proper maintenance records from the previous owner helps give more assurance that the car has been well cared for.

The truth of the matter is…

Why take chances with your hard earned money.

Selling A Car With A Lien

By Mike Reitz

Selling a car with a lien actually takes place quite often. This is because gone are the days of someone paying off a car loan and keeping it until it simply cannot go any further. Most often people change out cars every 3 years or so, therefore many cars are sold with a lien still attached.

Selling a car with an existing lien means that you will have to take a few extra steps on the sale to be sure that all the paperwork is done properly. By doing the paperwork according to regulations, it will help to protect you and your buyer.

So, what is a lien?

A lien is something that is placed on the vehicle until it is paid in full. The lending institutions do this so that their name remains on the title until the loan is satisfied. Essentially it means that both you and the lender own the car. This gives the bank the ability to reclaim the vehicle should you default on the payments.

So, if you choose to sell the vehicle before you have completely paid the loan, the loan will have to be satisfied before you can transfer ownership to the new buyer.

Ideally, if the buyer gave you cash, you could simply pay down the loan from the proceeds of the sale, and then pocket the balance, transfer the title and the process would be complete.

However, don’t expect the typical buyer to hand you cash…

Most people will have the concern that if they hand you cash, you will not pay down the loan and the ownership transfer cannot take place, this leaves the new buyer out the cash he gave you.

Paying cash for your vehicle is simply too risky for any potential buyer.

So, here are a couple suggestions on how to go about selling a car with a lien on it…

First and easiest is if you can satisfy the loan before selling the car. Simply pay off the remaining balance and get a lien release from the lender. This lien release will stand as proof to your potential buyer that the loan is paid in full.

Many people do not have these type of funds at their fingertips so if this is true for you, you will want to try the next option.

Next would be to do a pay-off and a transfer at the same time.

Contact the lender and find out how you can satisfy the loan with the proceeds from the sale of your car.

Most often, this will require an appointment with the bank. Then you the seller and your buyer will meet with the lender to complete the paperwork.

Once this is complete, you will want to take the lien release, bill of sale, proof of insurance and the title to the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) to do a title transfer. Here you will also pay the sales tax on the vehicle in order to receive your license plates.

Once these steps are complete you can rest assured that everything is handled legally and there is no confusion as to the ownership of your old vehicle.

Selling a car with a lien is very common situation in the car business. Following these few steps will give the buyer and seller peace of mind that everything is done legally; and both parties are protected

Creative Ways to Use Recycled Tires

By Trey Dawson

With climate change and the current state of the economy, recycling is now more important than ever. Statistics show that each year, at least one new tire is created for every person in the United States, and over 281 million tires are tossed out on scrap heaps every year as well.

This is a shame, because tires are made of strong and durable material, and just because they are no longer fit to be used for your vehicle, it doesn’t mean their days of usefulness are over. Finding ways to reuse your old scrap tires can greatly reduce the amount of waste you and your family produce each year and may also save you money. There are thousands of ways an old tire could be reused, but the following five ideas for recycling your tires should get you started off on the right path.

1. Planters

This is one of the most common uses for recycled tires. If you have a small vegetable plot or want to add some new flowerbeds to your landscaping, an old tire could be just what you need. Because the tire absorbs a lot of heat during the day, it makes an ideal environment for seedlings to grow. During the winter months, the tires can easily be covered to protect young plants from the cold.

2. Footwear

In the 60s, recycled tire sandals were hugely popular, and in many African countries, old tires are often used to create sandals or replace worn out shoe soles. A simple online search will help you find patterns to make your own pair of unique recycled tire sandals. It can be a fun activity to do in your spare time, and who knows? You might even start another trend.

3. Playground Equipment

Tires make the perfect base for many different items of playground equipment. You could save a lot of money on your yard’s play area by recycling your tires and your kids will love their new outdoor area. If you have normal sized car tires you can make a classic tire swing, or use the tires as the padding under a seesaw. Larger truck or tractor tires can be made into sandboxes or playhouses.

4. Secure Your Trash Cans

During heavy storms, your outdoor trash cans may blow over if they aren’t securely wedged in place. Save yourself the trouble of cleaning up the mess by simply using a heavy tire to keep your outdoor trash cans in place. This will also keep them out of the reach of pesky mice, rats and raccoons.

5. Furniture

You will have to be a bit creative to make this idea work, but there are some great items of furniture that can be made from recycled tires. Some people use them to make yard furniture, like stools and tables, as they are durable and can withstand harsh weather conditions. Some people have even made intricate household decorations from old car tires, including lamp shades, sculptures and side tables. Have a quick look online for furniture made from old tires; you will be amazed at how great it can look.
